ENGLISH LEAD

I am Miss Whitehead and I proudly lead English at Heron Cross Primary School, overseeing reading and writing across the curriculum. I am passionate about giving children the essential skills they need to become fluent, confident and enthusiastic readers and writers.

My love for English began when I was a pupil at Heron Cross. Books opened up new worlds, helped me understand different perspectives and sparked my imagination. Writing became a powerful way to express my thoughts and connect with others. These early experiences shaped who I am today, and they continue to inspire my work. I want every child to feel that same sense of wonder, possibility and empowerment through language.

At Heron Cross, I believe English is at the heart of learning. In line with the National Curriculum, my aim is for every child to read easily, fluently and with good understanding, to develop a love of reading, to acquire a wide vocabulary and to write clearly, accurately and creatively for a range of purposes. I work closely with teachers to ensure our curriculum is engaging, ambitious and inclusive, enabling all pupils to succeed.

From nurturing early reading through phonics to supporting older pupils as they explore rich texts, broaden their knowledge of grammar and refine their writing craft, I am committed to helping children build strong foundations for lifelong learning. Through inspiring lessons, high-quality texts and a culture that celebrates reading and writing, I strive to make English a subject where every child can shine.
