MATHS LEAD

I am Miss Townsend, a Year 6 teacher and the Maths Lead at Heron Cross Primary School. I have always enjoyed Maths and feel privileged to lead a subject that I genuinely love. Maths has always made sense to me, and sharing that feeling with both children and staff is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. Every day gives me the chance to spark curiosity, build confidence and show pupils that Maths is something they can genuinely enjoy.

For me, Maths is far more than numbers on a page. It is a way of thinking, solving problems and making sense of the world around us. I am passionate about helping children see how Maths appears in everyday life – in the patterns they spot, the decisions they make and the challenges they tackle. I want our pupils to understand that Maths is not just a lesson but a useful, creative and empowering skill that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

My vision reflects the aims of the national curriculum: for every child to become fluent and confident, to reason clearly and to be able to solve a wide range of problems. I want pupils to build strong foundations step by step, to understand why methods work and to apply their knowledge flexibly. Above all, I believe that every child can succeed in Maths with the right support, high expectations and opportunities to explore ideas in depth.

Leading Maths at Heron Cross allows me to bring this vision to life. I work closely with staff to ensure our teaching is consistent, ambitious and supportive, and I love seeing pupils grow in confidence as they embrace new challenges. Helping children develop a positive relationship with Maths—one where they feel capable, curious and resilient—makes this role incredibly fulfilling, and I am proud to champion Maths across our school.
