PHONICS LEAD

My name is Mrs Walker, and I am proud to lead phonics and early reading at Heron Cross Primary School. I currently teach Year 2, which gives me a clear understanding of how children progress as readers from the earliest stages of decoding to becoming more fluent, confident and thoughtful. My love for phonics began when I was a teaching assistant in EYFS, supporting children as they explored the building blocks of reading. Seeing how phonics enables pupils to segment, blend and unlock meaning from text inspired my commitment to helping every child succeed.

At Heron Cross, I believe strong phonics knowledge is the gateway to a lifetime of reading. In line with the aims of the National Curriculum, my vision is for every child to develop the confidence to read accurately, fluently and with increasing independence. I want pupils to experience success from the very beginning, to approach new vocabulary with curiosity and to enjoy a wide variety of books that broaden their understanding of the world.

Working closely with staff across the school, I ensure our phonics and early reading provision is consistent, ambitious and inclusive, enabling all children to thrive. Through high-quality teaching, regular practice and a classroom culture that celebrates reading, I aim to give every child firm foundations and a lasting love of books.

In Key Stage 1 we use Monster Phonics.  See below for further details.
